Paintballs are generally made out of gelatin and filled with water soluble dye. They also have seams where the gelatin is melted together.

There is no such thing as a perfect paintball. Paint generally changes during different temperatures and humidities. If a paintball is larger than the barrel, it will break inside and hinder accuracy until it is cleaned. You should never pick up paint off the ground and put it in a gun; these loads are generally swollen or dirty and will break in the gun, which will mean that the gun must be cleaned before it can be used again.

Paint should never be left in a car; not even in the boot, asthe heat will cause it to expand.

A good trick to maintain paint quality is to leave it in the airtight bag in which it is sold; this keeps out moisture. Then place it inside a coolbox, which will maintain it at a good temperature.

And as a final note, some people believe that frozen paintballs shoot better; however, this is unproven and dangerous.
